Beyond the pages of a book are the thoughts and lives of those who write them, often hidden in scribblings in the margins. What truths do these margin comments have that books themselves might not?
From the Archives (https://tcp.annewinchell.com/media/#l...
Singer-songwriter Laythe Layne, a Galion megastar before the War of Galio, survived her enlistment and was permitted to continue releasing music as part of a deal with the Rioran Empire to allow Galion culture to survive. All songs go through strict Watcher screening, though there is speculation that Laythe Layne has a powerful supporter within the Rioran hierarchy, as many of her songs have only barely passed review.
Find out more about Galio, the newest member of the Rioran Empire, and The Conquered Princes, a dark sci-fi novel with intense personal stakes and galactic ramifications, at https://tcp.annewinchell.com.

Full lyrics:
(Verse)
I pick a book from Public Records
Just to see what it's about
Five pages in, an annotation
That leads me deep into the weeds
The hands who wrote this now lie still
Yet still they speak to those who see
Their words and thoughts embedded here
Written for all the world to read
(Pre Chorus)
A comment here, correction there
A conversation across the ages
(Chorus)
We live through words
We learn through books
Our history spreads across the page
But underneath official tales
I see the people writing
Finding ways to leave the truth
Written in the margins
(Verse)
Another book, an epic journey
An Empire on the move to war
A writer celebrates the triumph
I notice that there's something more
Below the lists of casualties
A single mark, a single line
Crossing out the numbered deaths
Correcting it with twelve higher
(Pre Chorus)
A comment here, correction there
A conversation across the ages
(Chorus)
We live through words
We learn through books
Our history spreads across the page
But underneath official tales
I see the people writing
Finding ways to leave the truth
Written in the margins
(Bridge)
Opening a book to read
Is opening your mind to truth
But not the truth that's written straight
It's opening to all perspectives
You see a number: question it
You see a rule: ask why
You see a fact: can it be true?
A premise: can you refute it?
Facts and knowledge aren't carved in stone
They bend and merge with those who write
We leave our souls upon the page
For those who know just how to look
(Chorus)
We live through words
We learn through books
Our history spreads across the page
But underneath official tales
I see the people writing
Finding ways to leave the truth
Written in the margins
(Outro)
The next book I choose to read
I won't be looking at the plot
Not the story, not the people
Not history nor accuracy
I'll be looking for the truth
Of those who left these words behind
The words I always look to find
Written in the margins
