KUYILI | Unsung Woman Freedom Fighter of India | Reshma U Raj

Kuyili, one of India’s earliest and most fearless women freedom fighters, is a trusted commander in the army of Queen Velu Nachiyar of Sivagangai, Kuyili played a pivotal role in resisting the East India Company during the late 18th century. When British forces occupied the Sivagangai fort, Kuyili chose an act of unparalleled bravery—she doused herself in oil, set herself ablaze, and charged into the enemy ammunition depot, destroying it completely. This historic act is recorded as one of the earliest instances of suicide bombing in the world, carried out not for destruction, but for liberation and dignity. Despite her immense contribution, Kuyili’s story remained largely absent from mainstream historical narratives for centuries. The Government of India has recently officially acknowledged Kuyili among the country’s Unsung Heroes of the Freedom Struggle, honoring her extraordinary courage and supreme sacrifice against British colonial rule. This national recognition coincides with the release of a new dance film by the Kuchipudi dancer Reshma U Raj titled “Kuyili”, a powerful artistic tribute that brings her forgotten story to life for contemporary audiences. Rooted in classical Indian dance and cinematic storytelling, the film translates Kuyili’s valor, devotion, and sacrifice into movement, rhythm, and emotion, making history accessible beyond textbooks.
