Most people think the Cold War began when World War II ended. Nazi Germany collapsed. Japan surrendered. The United States and the Soviet Union emerged as the two strongest powers left standing, and the wartime allies suddenly became enemies. That is the familiar story. But it starts too late. The distrust between Washington and Moscow had deeper roots in the Russian Revolution, Western intervention in the Russian Civil War, ideological hostility, Soviet fears of invasion, and radically different ideas about what a secure postwar Europe should look like. World War II temporarily buried those conflicts beneath a common enemy. It did not erase them. Stalin saw Eastern Europe through the memory of repeated invasions from the West, culminating in the catastrophic German attack of 1941. American officials saw Soviet control of Eastern Europe as evidence that Moscow was building an expanding authoritarian sphere. Both sides increasingly described their own policies as defensive while interpreting the other side’s actions as aggression. Then came Yalta. Potsdam. The atomic bomb. The Soviet consolidation of Eastern Europe. The Long Telegram. Iran and Turkey. Churchill’s Iron Curtain speech. The Truman Doctrine. The Marshall Plan. And finally Berlin. Each crisis strengthened the belief that the other side represented not a temporary problem, but a long-term global threat. This documentary traces the deeper origin of the Cold War and explains why reducing the conflict to one speech, one dictator, one ideology, or one broken wartime promise misses the larger system. The Cold War grew when fear became strategy. And once every action was interpreted through suspicion, compromise began to look like surrender.
