Why are magnesium sheets strongly anisotropic, magnesium extrusions tension–compression asymmetric, and magnesium products usually formed at elevated temperatures?
This university lecture examines the processing, microstructure, mechanical behaviour, joining, corrosion and flammability of wrought magnesium alloys.
In this lecture, you will learn:
• Why room-temperature deformation is limited by magnesium’s HCP structure
• The roles of basal slip and deformation twinning
• Why prismatic and pyramidal slip become more active at elevated temperatures
• How magnesium sheets, plates, bars, tubes, shapes and forgings are manufactured
• Rolling processes and the development of crystallographic texture
• Why sheet anisotropy is a major challenge for magnesium alloys
• The relationship between texture, yield strength and sheet formability
• Automotive applications of magnesium sheet
• Direct and indirect extrusion processes
• Microstructure and texture in extruded magnesium alloys
• Tension–compression yield asymmetry
• Advantages of forged magnesium components
• Magnesium joining through TIG, MIG, laser, electron-beam and friction welding
• Pore formation during magnesium welding
• Why magnesium is highly sensitive to impurities during corrosion
• The stability and protective ability of magnesium oxide films
• Salt-fog corrosion testing
• The conditions required for magnesium ignition
• Why solid magnesium components are more difficult to ignite than magnesium powder
This lecture is suitable for students and engineers interested in lightweight manufacturing, metal forming, crystallographic texture, joining technology and corrosion engineering.
