In Part 3 of our Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi (N22A2) engine timing series, we tackle the most critical phase of the job—removing the worn factory chain assembly, aligning the timing marks, and installing the new components. With 430,000 km on the original block, ensuring perfect lubrication during initial startup is absolute law.
⚠️ CRITICAL ASSEMBLY ADVICE (Pre-Lubrication):
Before you reinstall the timing cover over your brand-new chain setup, you MUST thoroughly pre-lubricate the entire timing chain, gears, and guides. Pour clean engine oil directly over the assembly or apply a specialized assembly lubricant paste (such as Liqui Moly MoS2 Engine Assembly Guide Paste). Running a dry chain on the first engine start can scratch the plastic guides and cause premature chain stretch.
What is covered in PART 3:
Unbolting the old hydraulic chain tensioners and plastic guide rails.
Completely removing the old timing chain and oil pump drive assembly.
Lining up the crankshaft and camshaft timing alignment marks perfectly.
Installing the brand-new timing chain, new hydraulic tensioner, and fresh guide elements.
Pre-lubricating the assembly with high-quality lubricants.
Scraping and cleaning the timing cover mating surfaces.
Applying professional RTV silicone sealant and securing the timing cover to the block.
Reinstalling the heavy-duty structural side engine mounts.
