Rare 10 minute footage of the 1957 Philippine National elections held on November 1957, mainly covering incumbent President—and candidate for the Nationalista Party—Carlos Garcia’s campaign, and scenes of different voting booths. Also seen are the abundance of political election paraphernalia (posters, banners, etc). Music used are the campaign jingles of Presidential candidates Garcia, Yulo, Manahan and V.P Candidate Macapagal. Retrieved from the channel of ‪@cancionesdefilipinas1898‬ . Nationalista’s Carlos P. Garcia won the presidential election by plurality, the first in Philippine history (at a time when elections were mainly a 2-party contest), meanwhile for the Vice Presidency, Garcia’s running mate Jose Laurel Jr. was defeated by Liberal candidate Diosdado Macapagal who ran a much more effective campaign. Laurel the Younger was not favoured even by those within the Nationalistas, with prominent figures like Sergio Osmeña Jr. openly instructing their base to back Garcia but vote for a rival vice-presidential candidate. This was the first election in Philippine history where a President and Vice-President came from opposing tickets, which is not uncommon today.
