How much of a character can you actually trace and still turn it into a proper 2D animation? In this complete 2D character tracing, rigging and animation tutorial, I'll show you the entire process of taking a character image and turning it into an animation-ready character in Adobe Animate. This is a complete A-to-Z workflow where we don't stop at simply tracing the artwork. We'll trace the character, clean and prepare the different parts, add colors, rig the character, and then bring the character to life with animation. The goal is to show you how you can use a character reference or image as the starting point and turn it into something that you can actually animate. In This Tutorial You'll Learn: How to trace a character for 2D animation How much of a character you should trace How to trace the character's face How to trace the complete body How to trace the full front pose How to separate character elements for animation How to clean up traced artwork How to color the character How to prepare the artwork for rigging How to rig the character in Adobe Animate How to create animation-ready character parts How to animate the character after rigging How to add secondary animation How to animate the character's flame-like face How to animate the rotating moon badge on the chest How to animate the cape/background texture How to create continuous rotation animation How to combine different animated elements into one scene How to turn a traced character into a complete animated shot Character Animation Breakdown For this project, we'll create several animated elements to make the character feel alive. The flame-like face is animated to create continuous movement. The moon symbol on the chest rotates continuously. The universe-style texture inside the cape also moves and rotates, creating additional secondary motion. These small animations are combined with the character to create a complete animated scene instead of leaving the traced artwork as a static image. What You'll Learn From This Workflow The techniques in this tutorial aren't limited to this particular character. You can use the same workflow to create: Anime characters Cartoon characters Fantasy characters Game characters Original characters Story characters YouTube animation characters Character rigs for 2D animation If you're learning Adobe Animate, character design, character rigging, or 2D animation, this tutorial will give you a complete practical workflow from reference image → tracing → coloring → rigging → animation.
