Chania’s Most Unexpected Neighborhood | Tampakaria

These beautiful stone buildings on the coast of Chania were never built as seaside villas. This is Tampakaria, the old tannery district of Halepa. At its height, around 80 leather workshops operated along this small section of coastline. The sea was part of the production process, workers processed animal hides inside these buildings, and just uphill lived some of Chania’s wealthiest and most influential residents. Today, most of the industry is gone, but the old tannery buildings still give Tampakaria one of the most distinctive coastlines in Crete.
