Owning smartphones, automation and imported weapons does not make a country scientifically advanced. Gauhar Raza explains the crucial difference between science - the pursuit of knowledge through fearless questions - and technology, which expands human capacity but can serve anything from medicine to mass destruction. In this Kintu Parantu clip, Raza argues that India built a generation of respected scientists after Independence because its leadership understood that technology without domestic science creates dependence. He shows what that dependence looks like today: Google Maps can become critical infrastructure, France can withhold Rafale source code, foreign companies can reserve their latest technology, and hostile diplomacy can isolate Indian researchers and students from the collaboration science requires. The discussion moves from PL-480 food dependence and the Y2K outsourcing boom to brain drain, international research, Trump-era exclusion and Al-Biruni's warning about civilizations that believe they have nothing to learn. Raza says India once interrupted that decline by embracing science - and is now deliberately cutting the legs from the horse.
