Barack Obama is heading to Detroit to campaign for Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, but can his appearance address the concerns of Black Michigan voters?
In this episode of The Publisher's Desk, Black Westchester publisher Damon K. Jones examines El-Sayed's struggles to connect with some Black Detroit voters, the longstanding tensions between Black and Arab-American communities, and the economic challenges facing Black families after decades of Democratic political support.
We also revisit the Flint water crisis, which began during Obama's presidency. While Michigan's Republican state government bore primary responsibility, the Obama administration's EPA was later criticized for failing to intervene sooner.
Tonight's discussion:
Why did El-Sayed struggle with Black voters in Detroit?
What have decades of Democratic policies delivered for Black Michigan?
What does the Flint water crisis reveal about government accountability?
Can Obama's endorsement replace a specific policy agenda?
What should Black voters demand from candidates seeking their support?
Obama cannot be the policy. Black communities deserve measurable results.
