Today, more than one million people of Mexican origin live within the city of Los Angeles, and across LA County, that number rises above 3.5 million. Yet this story began long before modern immigration — before California became part of the United States and before Los Angeles became the global metropolis we know today. In this documentary, we travel through East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Panorama City, Olvera Street and beyond to explore the extraordinary Mexican world that exists inside LA. We meet immigrants who have spent decades building lives here, American-born Chicanos carrying two cultures, families preserving businesses across generations, women transforming lowrider culture, and Afro-Mexican entrepreneurs bringing the traditions of Guerrero to Southern California. We also uncover the deeper history behind the community — from migration and displacement to the 1968 East LA walkouts, the Chicano Movement, neighborhood murals, freeway construction and generations of cultural resistance. This is more than the story of Mexicans living in Los Angeles. It is the story of how Mexican people, food, language, art, activism and traditions helped create the Los Angeles the world knows today.
