In AD 117 the Roman Empire reached its greatest size, from northern Britain to the Persian Gulf. Less than 400 years later, the last emperor in the West was deposed, and nobody replaced him. In the final part of our History of Rome series we follow mad emperors and the five good emperors, the crisis of the third century, Constantine and Christianity, the Huns, Goths and Vandals, and the end of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476. We also show why the Eastern half survived until 1453.
