Magnus Carlsen lost his queen on move 24 to one quiet queen move. He fought on for fourteen moves without it, found one rook move that saved the game, and reached a completely level ending. Then his clock ran out. We replay the whole Armageddon: the queen trap built on a discovered check, the long defence, the moment Nakamura let the win slip, and the last two seconds. With pauses to find the move yourself, and the engine's view at every turning point.
Stavanger, 3 June 2024
Norway Chess 2024 was played in Stavanger from 27 May to 7 June 2024. Every drawn classical game went to an Armageddon: White 10 minutes, Black 7, a draw counting as a win for Black, and one second per move from move 41. In round seven, on 3 June, Hikaru Nakamura and Magnus Carlsen drew their classical game in 20 moves. In the Armageddon Nakamura won Carlsen's queen with 22.Qb3, let the win slip with 36.Qb4, and won on time after 51.Kh5 in a level ending. Carlsen said afterwards: "I just wasn't in blitz mode, unfortunately." He still won the tournament, his sixth Norway Chess title.
