🪝 Jiggy Lures — 20% off with code AMERICAN: https://jiggylures.com/southern-slab
First cast of the morning, two jigs on the line, and what comes back to the boat isn't a crappie. It's a bird's nest. Both jigs are wound around your main line, the hooks are stuck in each other, and by the time you've picked it apart with cold fingers, the school under you has moved on.
The fix is simple, and it's the whole reason this rig works: the heavier jig always goes on the bottom. I'll build it with you step by step, from the line and the knot to where you hang each jig, until it drops straight, fishes two depths at once, and quits tangling. The last step is the morning after the first October cold front, when yesterday's spot is empty.
🪝 THE LEADER AND THE KNOT — The rig hangs on about three feet of mono or fluorocarbon, four to ten-pound test, with a jig tied on each end. Go six or eight-pound over brush and timber. Then fold the leader into a loop about a foot up from the light jig, tie a double overhand knot, and run your main line through the loop. Hold it up before you fish it: the heavy jig has to hang lowest.
⚖️ HEAVY ON THE BOTTOM — The bottom jig is the anchor. It keeps the line tight so the light jig can't swing around and wrap, and that lets the same rig drift or troll without fouling. In shallow, calm water run a thirty-second on top and an eighth on the bottom. Out deep, in wind, or in current, go to an eighth on top and a quarter on the bottom.
👀 SIZE AND BODY TELL YOU — Put a different style and a different color on each jig, so the fish pick between two looks. The top jig is the one you test. Go bigger, an eighth or a quarter ounce, when the fish are aggressive, and smaller when they won't bite. Tip the top jig with a medium or big minnow when the bite is slow or the water is under fifty-five degrees.
🗺️ FIND THE BAIT FIRST — In the fall the baitfish don't hold one depth for long, and the crappie go where the shad go. Look for big, tight balls of bait. If sonar shows shad at eight to ten feet, hang both jigs inside that band, about eighteen inches apart. Without a screen, find the first bump and mark the line at the rod tip.
🍂 READ THE SKY, PICK THE DEPTH — On a bright, sunny day the fish can sit twelve to fifteen feet down. Under clouds and rain they can be three to six feet deep. When you're guessing, start in the ten-to-fourteen-foot range and move a couple of feet at a time. Over structure, sit on it. Over a flat, pull the rig at point eight to one point four miles an hour.
🌡️ October is where water temperature does the steering. Once the surface falls out of the mid seventies and drops past the mid sixties, the month turns over. In the upper sixties crappie slide shallower on the cool nights. In the high fifties they head back out deep for the winter, and the fishing is generally best once the water drops under sixty degrees. Under fifty-five, a minnow on the jig earns its keep. The Crappie Book is written by water temperature instead of by month: ten bands, and in each one it tells you where they hold, how deep, what size of bait, and what hour.
Six species books — crappie, walleye, yellow perch, bluegill, bass and catfish — 363 pages, thirty-seven dollars, one payment, thirty-day guarantee. Each book used to sell for fifty dollars on its own. The discount runs through the end of October: 👉 https://anglersvaultguide.app/crappie

🎣 FREE TIP NOT IN THE VIDEO: Keep an eye out for shad schools pushing up shallow as the fall goes on. Late in October on Kentucky Lake, more crappie moved up to 5 to 10 feet in pursuit of the shad. If you start seeing bait that high, don't keep fishing your deep mark from the morning. Pull the rig up and set both jigs inside that five-to-ten-foot band, where the fish are following the bait.
