Around 100,000 years ago, long before temples, priests or any written belief, someone dug a grave, laid a loved one inside and covered them with red earth. Nobody had told them about heaven, rebirth or an afterlife. So why did they do it?
Find out in this video:
🔹 Why the idea that religion taught us to bury our dead may be backwards
🔹 The 430,000-year-old “Pit of Bones” in Spain and the mysterious handaxe found among the bodies
🔹 Why the famous Neanderthal “flower burial” turned out to be a myth, and what stayed true
🔹 The red ochre graves of Qafzeh and Tinshemet, made by our own ancestors
🔹 Why Homo naledi’s possible burials are still debated among scientists
🔹 How burial may be older than religion by roughly 90,000 years
🔹 What early humans’ grief may tell us about where our stories of gods and the afterlife came from
Some of this evidence is confirmed and some is still argued over, and we cover both sides. The story suggests that love and loss may have come first, and the stories came later to explain them.
