Scientists studying Pashtun DNA have uncovered a genetic history far more complex than one tribe, one invasion, or one ancient bloodline.
Genetic research shows that Pashtun populations from Afghanistan and Pakistan share substantial paternal similarities, including a high frequency of R1a1a-M198/M17 lineages in several sampled groups. One major Y-chromosome study found that Afghan and Pakistani Pathans shared the same predominant paternal haplogroup and modal haplotype, supporting a strong genetic connection across the modern border.
But the deeper story is even more complex. Large-scale research across the Afghan Hindu Kush found that populations in this region form a genetic mosaic shaped by repeated gene flow from South Asia, Central Asia, Iran, and wider Eurasia. Pashtuns were comparatively homogeneous across Afghanistan and Pakistan in that study, yet they still carried multiple ancestral components reflecting thousands of years of migration through one of Asia’s most important crossroads.
