Gospel (Matthew 22:34–40): When tested by a lawyer asking which commandment is the greatest, Jesus summarizes the entire Law and the Prophets into two connected commandments:
1. To love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
2. To love your neighbor as yourself.
• The Two Dimensions of Love: Jesus teaches that love of God and love of neighbor cannot be separated; they are two sides of the same coin. You cannot claim to love God whom you cannot see if you neglect or mistreat your neighbor whom you can see.
• Practical Compassion: True neighborly love requires action. Drawing from Exodus, it means showing mercy, dealing justly, and refusing to take advantage of the weak or marginalized.
• Simplifying the Law: Out of hundreds of religious laws and customs, Jesus cuts through legalism to restore the core intent of God's covenant: love.
