It was White who proposed that she cut an English-language version of Umberto Tozzi’s hit song "Gloria." Reflecting on the process, Branigan noted that when they listened to the original track, they decided to inject it with an American energy, rewrite the lyrics, and launch it from there. Branigan later shared with People magazine that she and her production team initially tried to record the English version as a traditional romance song—even changing the title to "Mario"—but found that approach fell flat. Instead, they completely reinvented the track, transforming it into a character study about a girl who, as Branigan described, was running a bit too fast for her own good. By 2003, Branigan fully embraced "Gloria" as her signature track. She noted that no matter where she traveled or performed, the crowd's reaction was always identical: she had to close every single concert with it, and the audience would completely lose themselves in the music. Commercial Performance The definitive and most successful rendition of "Gloria" appeared on Branigan's 1982 debut album, Branigan. Even though another track called "All Night with Me" was originally selected as the lead single, Branigan frequently performed "Gloria" during her television appearances to promote the album. Recognizing its potential, the label released it as the second single in June 1982. It quickly grew into a favorite across dance floors and steadily gained radio airplay over the summer. By late November 1982, the single peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, holding the spot for three consecutive weeks behind Lionel Richie’s "Truly" before Toni Basil’s "Mickey" took over the top slot. The track earned Branigan a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance Female. It enjoyed an exceptionally long run on the charts, staying in the Top 40 for 22 weeks. Its total of 36 weeks on the Hot 100 set a new longevity record for a solo female artist at the time. "Gloria" also hit number one on the Cash Box magazine chart. In the United States, it achieved platinum status for selling more than two million copies. Internationally, the track was a massive success—spending seven weeks at number one in Australia, topping the charts in Canada, reaching the top five in Ireland, and landing in the top ten in New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. Notable Inclusions In January 2021, the song drew renewed public attention when it was played over the sound system at Donald Trump's "Save America" rally, as seen in a viral backstage video filmed by Donald Trump Jr. Because the rally was immediately followed by the attack on the United States Capitol, Kathy Golik, Branigan's legacy manager, issued a public statement. She expressed that it was deeply upsetting to hear "Gloria" associated with the event, calling the use of the song appalling given the tragic and shameful events that unfolded at the Capitol. #gloria #umbertotozzi #laurabranigan #80s #80smusic #80svibes This is an original musical project developed by N3ONCOVR. ⚠️ Technical Note: The vocal performance featured in this track is a Cover Version (re-recorded or simulated vocals) and does not utilize the artist's original master recording.
