Hurricane Isaias is strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico as coastal Alabama prepares for dangerous storm surge, flooding rain and damaging winds on Friday, October 9, 2026. Mobile Bay could see water levels reach 5 to 7 feet above normally dry ground, while a shift in the storm's landfall could determine which communities face the deepest flooding.
Hurricane warnings cover coastal and inland Mobile and Baldwin counties, with the threat extending from Mississippi into Florida's Panhandle. In Mobile, forecasters warn that floodwater could reach downtown, the Mobile River and nearby waterways. The Highway 90 Causeway and other coastal escape routes could become impassable as water rises.
Dauphin Island has issued an evacuation notice for its western end, with possible water service disruptions adding to preparations. Heavy rain could bring 3 to 6 inches to the Mobile area and locally higher totals along the coast, while damaging winds, prolonged power outages, tornadoes and surf reaching 12 to 14 feet pose additional risks.
In this video, we examine the storm surge threat in Mobile Bay, evacuation preparations on Dauphin Island, the risk of flash flooding across Alabama, and the timeline for Isaias' expected landfall.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
