I've probably heard it a thousand times — in movies, in stores, bleeding out of someone's open car window. It became furniture. Background. One of those songs you stop actually hearing because you've heard it so many times. Then one Saturday it came on and I was tired in a way I couldn't name. And suddenly I heard it. Not the guitars. Not the melody. The thing underneath — this guy just pointing at the sky and saying: I did all of this for you. No demands. No conditions. Just look at it. I had to sit down. There's a kind of love in that song that doesn't ask for anything back. It just offers itself, completely, and waits. I don't know if that's beautiful or devastating. Maybe it's both.
