Gaudi's Sagrada Familia: Japanese sculptor reveals the secrets and passion behind the masterpiece

Spain's Sagrada Família, The Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family in Barcelona, is truly an exceptional church, the masterpiece by the genius architect Antoni Gaudi. Long known as the 'Unfinished Church’, the construction started in1882 and has been under construction for over 140 years. The blueprints for the Sagrada Familia were burned in the Spanish Civil War and the models were destroyed, but architects and sculptors applied their own creativity to produce the building based on Gaudi’s ideas. A Japanese master sculptor SOTOO Etsuro is the longest serving staff member for the construction and has been sculpting stones for 48 years. He has produced many sculptures and fifteen angel statues that decorate the Nativity Façade are among his most important works there.
