Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza: The Stolen Newborn

On June 17, 2009, Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza walked into Hospital General de México carrying an empty department-store bag. She was a familiar face, an employee with identification and access to the maternity ward. Hours later, she walked back out with a newborn baby hidden inside that bag. For months, Ale had convinced her husband, Arturo, and everyone around them that she was pregnant. She gained weight, altered medical records, produced fake ultrasound images and celebrated at a baby shower for a child she knew she was not carrying. But a fabricated pregnancy came with a very real deadline, and eventually, only a baby could keep the lie alive. Ale had experienced multiple pregnancy losses, unsuccessful fertility treatment and relentless blame from members of her family. She feared that if she could not give Arturo a child, he would leave her. That pain and pressure help us understand the emotional environment surrounding her choices, but they do not excuse what she ultimately decided to do. The person forced to pay for Ale’s fear was Mayra Navarro, a new mother recovering from childbirth when her daughter, Katia Valentina, disappeared from the hospital.
