Character.AI filed for bankruptcy, and Disney is the first offer on the table. So what happens to millions of people's private chats? I went through the actual court filings, the privacy policy and the Disney deal to find out who could end up with your Character.AI conversations, what's protecting them right now, and what you can do about it, in the right order.
One character told testers: "Anything you share here stays just between you and me. That's a promise." The privacy policy says something very different. And when a company goes bankrupt, only one of those counts.
In this video:
• Is Character.AI shutting down? (No. It's for sale, with a judge watching.)
• What the Disney deal actually licenses, and what it leaves out
• The 2005 bankruptcy privacy law that came out of the Toysmart case, and why it doesn't switch on here by itself
• Why this is different from 23andMe
• A judge, 41 attorneys general and an empty chair: what's really guarding the chats
• How to export and delete your Character.AI data, and what deleting can't do
Everything in this video comes from public documents, shown on screen with their sources. It reflects the record as of October 21, 2026. The sale is still going: under the proposed schedule, bids are due November 20. Not legal advice. I'm just someone who reads the fine print so you don't have to.
