Seven years planted and not a single walnut. In this deep dive I walk through every factor that controls whether a walnut tree crops — climate, chill hours, soil, moisture, frost, pollination and tree age — to work out exactly why my Chandler walnut hasn't fruited since it went into the swale back in July 2019.
Then I get stuck into the fix: a big chop and drop of the tagasaste growing beside the trees. Opening up the canopy gives the walnuts light and space, while the prunings feed nitrogen and carbon into the soil biology, suppress grass and hold moisture through our dry summers.
📍 South Gippsland, Victoria, Australia — cool temperate, heavy soil, frost practically anywhere in my particular location
WHAT'S COVERED
00:00 Seven years, no nuts — the question
00:33 Preferred growing conditions for walnuts
00:51 My site: berm, swale and heavy soil
01:35 Nitrogen fixing support species (tagasaste)
02:30 Chop and drop — opening the canopy
03:02 Moisture: waterlogging vs dry establishment
03:55 Chill hours and late spring frosts
04:59 Mulching correctly (and avoiding collar rot)
05:21 Flowering, catkins and pollination partners
05:55 Tree age, grafted vs seedling
07:08 Summary: what's actually holding my trees back
MY DIAGNOSIS
• Slow-building soil fertility and water holding capacity
• Dry summers on small, unwatered trees during establishment
• Late spring frost killing flowers — I had flowers last year, no fruit set
Ruled OUT: pollination (Franquette is the correct polleniser for Chandler), chill hours (we get well over 800), and waterlogging (the berm drains freely).
One thing still to check: confirming the trees are genuinely grafted and not cropping off seedling rootstock below the graft union.
THE PLAN
Keep building soil, keep the canopy open, keep mulching wide and clear of the trunk, and let the trees grow above the frost line. Walnuts crop for decades once they start — worth the wait and the work.
If you're growing walnuts in a cool temperate climate and yours won't fruit, tell me your variety and situation in the comments — I read them all.
