April 28, 1603. More than a thousand mourners in black. Four grey horses draped in velvet. And on top of the coffin, a life-sized painted effigy of Queen Elizabeth I, so lifelike that thousands of Londoners wept openly in the streets.
But the funeral is only the final act. In this video, we trace the last months of the Virgin Queen: her retreat to Richmond Palace, the deaths of those she loved, the four days she spent sitting on floor cushions, and the final breath that ended the Tudor dynasty after 118 years.
Inside this story:
• Why Elizabeth refused to lie down in her bed
• The strange account of the coffin that burst open at Whitehall
• The order of the funeral procession, from 260 poor women to the riderless horse
• Why Arabella Stuart refused to be chief mourner
• How James I spent over £11,000 on the funeral, yet never attended it
• The shared tomb of Elizabeth and her sister Mary I, and the inscription that binds them
• The Elizabethan corset discovered in 1995, hidden beneath the effigy
Sources and accounts referenced include John Stow, Henry Chettle's "England's Mourning Garment," Sir Robert Carey's memoirs, and Elizabeth Southwell's testimony.

Tell me in the comments: do you think James I placed the two sisters together as reconciliation, or simply to clear space for himself?
