Originally written by the iconic Broadway songwriting duo John Kander and Fred Ebb for Martin Scorsese’s 1977 film starring Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro, the song was permanently transformed when Sinatra took it into the studio in 1979. Arranged by Don Costa for the critically acclaimed 1980 triple album Trilogy: Past Present Future, the track became a massive crossover hit, earning a Grammy nomination and becoming inextricably linked to Sinatra's legacy. It quickly took its permanent place as his traditional concert closer, perfectly bridging his classic Capitol Records era with his modern Reprise Records catalog. The Concert for the Americas broadcast remains a historical high-water mark for American popular music on television. Featuring frequent instrumental collaborators like guitarist Tony Mottola alongside Buddy Rich's unparalleled rhythmic engine, the show placed the ultimate 20th-century pop vocalist in a spectacular outdoor setting. This culminating performance of "New York, New York" perfectly distills the era, capturing the definitive swing, brass-heavy orchestration, and undeniable swagger of Frank Sinatra in his final performing decades.
