An old man steps out of his tent into the desert night. He cannot
sleep. He is past seventy-five, richer than he can count, and emptier
than he has ever felt — because God promised him a son years ago, and
he is still standing in the dark with no child.
He looks up at the black sky. And a voice cuts through the silence.
"Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield."
Do not be afraid. The very first time God speaks those words to a human
being by name, He speaks them to a frightened old man staring up at the
stars. And He would say them again. And again. And again.
You have heard the famous claim — that the Bible says "do not be afraid"
365 times, one for every day of the year. But whether the real number
is two hundred or four hundred, it does not matter. Because this was
never a story about a number.
It is a story about every single time the God of the universe leaned
down into the worst moment of a real person's life — a childless old
man, a slave dying in a desert, a terrified teenage girl, a fisherman,
a grieving father — and said the very same three words.
And it ends in the strangest place of all: a barren island of black
volcanic rock, where the last disciple alive on earth falls on his face
before a vision so overwhelming he drops like a corpse.
Once you see who God says "fear not" to, and when He chooses to say it,
you will never hear those words as a scolding again. You will hear them
as the most tender promise in the whole Bible. Because every single
time, He says "do not be afraid" — and then in the same breath, He
gives you the reason: I am with you. The command was a promise the
whole time.
