What if some of the world's mining waste isn't really waste?
Old mine tailings can still contain copper, gold, silver and even critical minerals that were never recovered during the original mining process.
In this video, we explore why valuable metals remain in mine tailings, how enormous volumes can make even tiny concentrations significant, and how modern technologies such as flotation, leaching and bioleaching could potentially recover some of these resources.
We also look at why contained metal does not necessarily mean recoverable metal, and why geology, mineralogy, processing technology, environmental considerations and economics ultimately determine whether old mining waste can become a resource.
Earth Below explores geology, mining, mineral resources and the engineering behind the materials that shape our world.
