🎵 The crave - Jelly Roll Morton (1907 - Ragtime Piano Solo)
🎹 Solo piano performance by Francesco Guzzi
"The Crave" captures the essence of early jazz, with its syncopated rhythms, habanera influence, and rich harmonic textures. Composed in 1907 by Jelly Roll Morton — one of the pioneers of New Orleans jazz — this piece remains a timeless example of ragtime fusion with Latin American elements. "The Crave" incorporates the habanera rhythm, a Cuban influence with a characteristic 3+3+2 syncopation. Morton called this the “Spanish tinge”, a Creole flavor he considered essential to authentic jazz.
🧠 About the composer:
Jelly Roll Morton (1890–1941) was one of the first great jazz composers and pianists, blending ragtime with blues and Creole rhythms to shape the early sound of American jazz.
🎬 In popular culture:
This piece gained renewed attention through its inclusion in the 1998 film "The Legend of 1900", directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. In a memorable scene, the character 1900 engages in a piano duel with Jelly Roll Morton, portrayed by Clarence Williams III. Morton performs The Crave, showcasing his virtuosity, which is then met and surpassed by 1900's extraordinary improvisation .
