The Aztec Empire built Tenochtitlan on a lake an island capital larger than Paris or London, engineered from swampland by a people who had nowhere else to go. This is how the Aztecs turned the worst real estate in the Valley of Mexico into the heart of an empire.
We've walked through the jungle-swallowed platforms of the Maya and the god-kings of the Khmer Empire. This time, we go to a lake in central Mexico, where a landless people built something even stranger: a capital city floating on water, ruled by an empire that would come to dominate Mesoamerica.
In this video, we cover:
🏝️ How the Mexica went from unwanted outsiders to founders of Tenochtitlan
🌾 Chinampas — the floating-garden farming system that fed a city with no farmland
⚔️ The Triple Alliance and the tribute system behind Aztec expansion
🌸 The Flower Wars and the religious role of warfare in Aztec society
🛕 The Templo Mayor and the empire's cosmology
🏙️ Daily life inside Tenochtitlan at its peak — markets, merchants, and a city bigger than most of Europe
