It’s 1986. Two young lovers from a small Midwestern town have been told they don’t belong together. Their families don’t approve. Their futures have already been planned for them. So one night, they make a different plan. Two bags. A stolen car. A highway map. And two hundred dollars to California. They don’t get far before the gas runs dry. Stranded on a dark highway before dawn, doubt begins to creep in. A passing trucker offers them a ride to the nearest rest stop — food, warmth, somewhere to rest… and a payphone if they decide they’ve made a mistake. They stare at that phone. Then they keep heading west. What begins as a reckless teenage escape becomes an adventure across America — truck stops, Greyhound buses, cheap motels, open skies and a shared dream of reaching California. Until somewhere along the road, they lose each other. No cell phones. No social media. No way to know where the other has gone. Only one promise: Keep heading west.
