Mira - Yosuke Nomoto “Mira” is a vibrant percussion ensemble work composed by Japanese percussionist and composer Yosuke Nomoto. The piece is structured in a three-part form (fast–slow–fast) centered around the vibraphone, with various percussion instruments intertwining and exchanging melodic material throughout. The title “Mira” refers to the famous variable star Omicron Ceti in the constellation Cetus (the Whale). Known as “Mira the Wonderful,” this star has been observed since 1596 to periodically change its brightness over a cycle of approximately 332 days, ranging from naked-eye visibility to near invisibility. Nomoto draws inspiration from this celestial phenomenon, crafting a musical landscape where the melody and texture similarly transform and evolve: Bright and dense passages give way to sparse, delicate moments, mirroring the star’s pulsating nature. The work features a rich palette of percussion instruments including glockenspiel, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, timpani, congas, tam-tam, chimes, and various auxiliary percussion, with the contrabass adding depth to the ensemble’s sonority.
