What's the #1 ASL skill I believe every interpreter needs to master? Role shifting. 🎭
In this video, I explain why role shifting is one of the most valuable yet underdeveloped skills I see among ASL interpreters.
When I first started teaching ASL, the curriculum instructed me to demonstrate role shifting through exaggerated shoulder movements. I remember being confused because that's not how I naturally use role shifting as a native Deaf signer.
In natural ASL, role shifting can be much more subtle, often communicated through eye gaze and slight head movements. These details are easy to overlook if you haven't developed the skills to recognize them.
I've seen interpreters misunderstand who is speaking or being represented because they assume the Deaf person is talking about themselves when they're actually portraying someone else. That misunderstanding can significantly affect message accuracy.
Role shifting is especially valuable because it helps create clear, visual interpretations while reducing processing demands. This is particularly important in medical interpreting, where accurately representing different people, perspectives, and actions is essential.
Mastering role shifting requires more than learning when to move your shoulders. It requires developing an understanding of how native Deaf signers naturally use their eyes, head, body, and space to communicate meaning.
If role shifting is an area where you struggle, I encourage you to make it a priority in your professional development. Strengthening this skill can make your interpretations more accurate, natural, and effective for the Deaf consumers you serve.
