Tonya Gilliland has done hair in Hastings, Nebraska, for twenty-nine years. Four days a week women sit in her chair and tell her about their marriages and their mothers, and she knows things about that town the town does not know it told her.
At a routine appointment before her knee surgery, the anesthesiologist read off her tablet without looking up. “I see you have a do-not-resuscitate order on file,” she said. “Do you want that to remain in effect?”
“A what?” Tonya said.
It had been in her chart for eighteen months, since the spring she spent six days on a ventilator, and it had been there through two surgeries she walked into without knowing.
She asked her husband what happened in that hospital. “Tonya,” he said, “you were on a ventilator.” So she paid sixty-one dollars for all two hundred and six pages of her own record, and on page ninety-four, in quotation marks, was a sentence she had said once, in a car, in two thousand nineteen, about somebody else. This emotional family drama is a story about a family meeting, a daughter who concurred, nine seconds nobody gave her, and what happens when you say a thing once and a man remembers it as who you are.
