British Rail Class 153 "Super Sprinter" No. 153308 in EMR Regional Livery
Constructed by Leyland Bus at Workington, Cumbria in 1988 as vehicle No. 52308 within two-car Class 155 unit No. 155308, and comprehensively converted into an independent single-car railcar by Hunslet-Barclay at Caledonia Works, Kilmarnock between 1991 and 1992, 153308 is a 38-year-old second-generation "Super Sprinter" diesel multiple unit (DMU) owned by the Great Central Railway. Powered by an underfloor-mounted Cummins NT855-R5 14.0-litre (855 cu in) 6-cylinder turbocharged four-stroke diesel engine developing 285 hp (213 kW) at 2,100 rpm, the railcar drives the inner axle of the leading bogie through a Voith T 211 r hydrokinetic hydraulic transmission and Gmeinder final drive gearbox. Weighing 41.2 tonnes (40.5 long tons) in full working order, the vehicle produces a maximum starting tractive effort of approximately 10,000 lbf (44.5 kN), an operational service top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h), and carries an onboard fuel capacity of 1,500 litres (330 imperial gallons) with seating accommodation for up to 72 passengers. The railcar is immaculately turned out in authentic East Midlands Railway (EMR) Regional livery, featuring a large, dominant dark blue center bodyside section spanning the passenger saloon and window line, flanked on either side by sweeping dynamic accent swooshes of vibrant orange and deep red that wrap outwards towards the outer cab quarters. The scheme is accented by contrasting high-visibility warning yellow passenger plug doors, full yellow warning ends across both driving cabs, a clean mid-grey roof, and heavy-duty three-piece track-clearing miniature snowploughs fitted below the bufferbeams.
Modern Image DMU on Heritage Rails: The Great Central Railway Network
Operating along the double-track preserved mainline of the Great Central Railway, unit 153308 presents an unusual and rare sight of modern-image second-generation diesel traction on a heritage line renowned for recreating classic steam and early British Rail corporate eras. Acquired by the railway to handle passenger shuttles, staff transit, and off-peak workings with high fuel efficiency, this single-car railcar offers a striking contemporary contrast against the GCR's traditional home fleet of steam locomotives and first-generation heritage diesels.
Departing Leicester North and Climbing the Incline on the 09:18 to Loughborough Central
Seen in 8K 16:9 widescreen departing Leicester North station on Saturday, 5th of September 2026 at 09:20, Class 153 No. 153308 works the 09:18 scheduled passenger service bound for Loughborough Central via Quorn & Woodhouse during the Autumn Diesel Gala. Accelerating out of the station throat and tackling the steep uphill incline through the cutting, the 38-year-old railcar digs into the grade as its 285 hp Cummins turbocharged diesel engine opens up under load, emitting a distinctive throaty growl and hydraulic whine that echoes off the cutting banks on a warm, sunny autumn morning.
