IWCB Wind Symphony plays The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber (arr Johan de Meij) The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical The Phantom of the Opera opened in London’s West End in 1986, and on Broadway in New York City two years later, where it played continuously for the following 35 years. It became the longest-running show on Broadway by a wide margin, ending a run of 13,981 shows in 2023. The plot revolves around a beautiful soprano singer who becomes the obsession of a disfigured musical genius. The music combines bombastic rock with lush operatic structures. The score relies heavily on recurring themes, most notably the mysterious descending bassline of the Phantom’s theme. You may also recognise “Angel of Music”, “Music of the Night” (listen for the haunting French horn theme), “Think of Me”, “All I Ask Of You” (this love duet is emotion rendered music), and “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again”. Our conductor: Josh McNulty Our Musical Director Joshua McNulty graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium in 2015, where he studied with Dr John Lynch and Dr Anthony Clarke. He is the founder and Musical Director of the FilmHarmonia Orchestra, directs numerous school bands across Sydney, and tutors many students on their instruments. Primarily a reed player, he has recently started to dive into brass instruments in addition to his conducting and education work. Joshua brings his keen interest in music written with a narrative to the programming of IWCB Wind Symphony concerts.
