Thinking about how to sell your business? This video discusses six commonly considered exit paths, how each one generally works, and the kinds of owners each one may fit.
Many business owners have heard of one or two ways to exit, usually a sale to an outside buyer. Mike Brezden, CFA®, walks through six approaches owners commonly consider: what each one is, who ends up owning the business, how long it can take, what it can cost you, and who it may or may not suit.
The six paths discussed:
• Selling to an outside buyer
• Selling part now and the rest later (a private equity recapitalization)
• Selling to your partners
• Selling to your management team (a management buyout)
• Selling to your employees (an ESOP)
• Handing the business to family, including estate equalization
Each path carries its own trade-offs in price, timing, control, and cost. Business-transition structures can overlap, and other alternatives may exist. The video closes on two questions about you, financial readiness and mental readiness, that can help narrow the list.

The Business Exit Readiness Index (BERI™) is a 20-question survey that places an owner in one of four groups based on financial readiness and mental readiness. The survey asks for your contact details. Your answers are shared with Mike's office only if you check the box that allows it.
