Indian agriculture is trapped in a low-level equilibrium with small farm sizes and low farmer incomes. It is believed that over-regulation and market power of intermediaries reduces the share of the consumer's rupee that reaches the farmer. Moreover, regulation disincentivizes the entry of the private sector and thus formalization of the supply chains. In this talk, Shoumitro Chatterjee will draw upon his research to shed light on some of the core challenges facing Indian agricultural markets as well as reflect on the economics of three new farm laws.
Shoumitro Chatterjee is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Pennsylvania State University. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Policy Research and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study of India at UPenn.
