Why did Germany really lose the Battle of Britain? In the summer of 1940, the Luftwaffe had more planes, more experienced pilots, and had just crushed France in six weeks. Yet by the 15th of September 1940, Hitler’s air force had failed to destroy the RAF, and two days later Operation Sea Lion, the German invasion of Britain, was postponed for good.
In this animated World War 2 documentary, we look at every famous explanation for Germany’s defeat in the Battle of Britain, from both sides. We cover radar and the Chain Home stations, Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding and his system of fighter control, and the cruel geography of the English Channel. We also cover the Polish 303 Squadron and the foreign pilots of RAF Fighter Command, Hermann Göring’s overconfidence, the Luftwaffe’s attacks on the airfields, and Hitler’s fateful switch to bombing London that began the Blitz.
But underneath it all was one simple sum that German intelligence never solved. While the Luftwaffe counted kills, Britain was building and repairing Spitfires and Hurricanes faster than Germany could shoot them down, in factories like Castle Bromwich in Birmingham. This is the real story of how “the Few” won the Battle of Britain, and why Germany lost the air war over Britain in 1940.
