In a manual gearbox every gear is turning all the time, even in neutral. So what actually changes when you shift? We built a real Tremec T-5 five-speed from the 1990-93 Mustang 5.0 in 3D, to its published tooth counts, and cut it open so you can watch the sleeves, the brass rings and the gears do the work.
In this video:
• How the engine turns every gear through the countershaft
• Why the gears spin on needle bearings without turning the shaft
• The synchronizer: a hub splined to the shaft and a sleeve that slides on it
• First gear: 34/23 x 34/15 = 3.35 to 1
• Why gears grind, and how the brass blocker ring stops it
• Fourth gear is direct drive, 1 to 1
• Fifth is an overdrive (59 teeth drive 27)
• Why reverse crunches if the car is still rolling
