1983 Stock: Why London Replaced These Trains After Just 14 Years

Beneath the streets of London, a new generation of Tube train arrived in the 1980s to serve the capital’s newest Underground line. Built by Metro-Cammell and introduced in 1984, the London Underground 1983 Stock was designed specifically for the Jubilee line, combining the traditional engineering philosophy of earlier Tube trains with a more modern appearance inspired by contemporary rolling stock. With bright interiors, distinctive single-leaf doors and aluminium-bodied construction, these trains became the face of the original Jubilee line between Stanmore and Charing Cross.
