Tonight we spend one whole summer day with Ellen, a fifteen-year-old maid-of-all-work in a narrow terraced house in Islington, London, in June of the year eighteen eighty-five. In films a Victorian house has a butler, a cook and footmen; most servants worked alone. Shutters at six, the kitchen range, the front step and the milkman, boots and the breakfast urn, beds and slops, Friday's dining-room, dinner at one, the knife machine, a black dress for the afternoon, bright tins, a long summer evening, and one candle up to the room under the tiles.
No ads in the first 30 minutes. After that, ads only fall between chapters. The narration slows down as the day ends, and the last half hour is the quietest.
