At Grappling36 in Dedemsvaart, GRPL Submission Wrestling gets one of the cleanest style matchups of the event: Rens, a Judo black belt, faces Ruben, a BJJ brown belt, in a 7-minute choke-only match filmed during a 36-hour charity grappling event. This is exactly the kind of fight the GRPL ruleset was built for. A judoka who can create pressure, grips, and forward momentum meets a BJJ specialist who is used to working through scrambles, guard situations, and submission threats. But the rules remove every easy scoring route. Throws do not score. Pins do not score. Control does not score. The only thing that changes the match is a successful choke. Rens has become a familiar name on the GRPL mat. His Judo background gives him a strong base in the standing exchanges, and his black belt experience makes him dangerous whenever the fight turns physical. He can force opponents to react, break their posture, and turn small openings into uncomfortable positions. Ruben brings a different kind of problem. As a BJJ brown belt, he does not need the match to look dominant from the outside. He can be dangerous from guard, during transitions, or in any scramble where the neck becomes available. Against a pressure-based judoka, that makes every entry risky: one aggressive movement can open the door to a choke. The match is fought over 1 round of 7 minutes. Every successful choke submission is worth 1 point, followed by a standing reset. If the score is tied after regulation time, the fighters take a short break before Golden Score begins. In Golden Score, the first successful choke wins. That creates a very specific kind of tension. Rens has to decide when to push forward and when to stay patient. Ruben has to find the right moment to turn movement into a real submission threat. Both fighters know that a strong position means nothing unless it leads to the neck. This is Rens vs Ruben.
