It is easy to miss because the area is surrounded by newer high-rise developments, but the neighbourhood retains a distinctly local, old-school Singapore atmosphere. At the heart of the area is Kukoh 21 Food Centre, located at 1 Jalan Kukoh, Singapore 161001. The centre is on the ground floor of an HDB block and is a relatively compact neighbourhood hawker centre. 🏮 A little history The food centre dates back to 1969. It originally served as both a market and food centre. After upgrading works in 2010, the market section was converted into a food centre with 21 cooked-food stalls. This gives Kukoh 21 a different character from the large, famous hawker centres in Chinatown. It feels more like a neighbourhood makan place, serving residents and nearby workers. 🍜 What can you eat there? Some of the food associated with Kukoh 21 includes: Traditional Teochew kueh – especially soon kueh, peng kueh, koo chai kueh and other handmade varieties. Malay-Muslim food – including nasi lemak, mee siam, mee rebus and lontong. The $2.50 Shop has attracted attention for its very affordable dishes. Teochew-style dishes – including pig organ soup and braised pork dishes at Ri Tao Fu. Other everyday hawker favourites such as noodles, porridge, mixed rice and curry chicken noodles. One particularly interesting stall is Jalan Kukoh Teochew Kueh, which is run by the Loh family and continues traditional handmade Teochew kueh-making.
