Firestop Special Inspections - Video 4 of a 7 part series Inspecting firestop joint systems When inspecting joints, you will first want to verify if the joint system has been tested for the amount of movement required per design. Joint systems are often dynamic and so will require products that move with it. A fire resistive joint system must be equal to or greater than the assemblies it is adjacent to. So check the life safety plans to determine the rating of the joint being firestopped. You will want to observe the nominal installed width of the joint at the framing inspection… any limitations are outlined in the system details. The supplied products must have labels from a recognized quality assurance agency. For penetrations you are looking for ASTM E1966 or UL 2079. Forming, packing or backing material is often required in joints systems and will usually call out the mineral fiber orientation and compression %. And finally the type of sealant, coating or device and the amount, depth, location will be specified, as will any required accessory items such as cover plates, bond breaker tape, and specified deflection track.
