Leica Summicron 50mm f/2 Collapsible | 黄玻璃：能拍出空气的镜头，真的吗

Leica's first 50mm Summicron — the collapsible one — is said to photograph air. I took a yellowed copy to Jiande and shot it against a Rigid. The legend: it was Cartier-Bresson's everyday lens, and Japanese writers call it the lens that renders air. The yellow: the front group used thorium glass and has ambered with age — which also means it behaves like a built-in half-stop yellow-green filter. I shot it side by side with the Rigid, the second version. The Rigid is cleaner: higher resolution, more comfortable contrast. The yellow glass does have atmosphere, in the right light, but "photographs air" is a stretch. One mistake worth owning: I exposed the yellow-glass frames as if the lens were neutral, so they are about half a stop dark. That is on me, not on the lens. Will I keep it? Yes. The collapsible is small, the rendering is unlike anything modern, and the 50/2 AA cannot do this. The short version: 1. It is Leica's first 50 Summicron, and it collapses into the body. 2. The yellow is thorium glass ageing — it also costs you half a stop of light. 3. Against the Rigid, the Rigid wins on resolution and contrast. 4. The "air" is real enough in the right light, and overrated everywhere else. 5. Whether Cartier-Bresson actually used it is an open question.
