Can you smoke an Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story in less than an hour? Apparently not if you're recording a podcast. In Episode 31 of Burnt Offerings, Patrick, Ryan and Steven try something we've never done before: recording an entire episode without a single postproduction edit. No cuts, no cleaned-up conversations, no stopping to Google something and coming back sounding like experts. Just three guys in a garage, three Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Stories and whatever happens next. *The cigar: Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story* The Short Story is one of Arturo Fuente's most recognizable cigars, a distinctive 4 x 49 short perfecto from the Hemingway series. Featuring an African Cameroon wrapper over Dominican binder and filler, it's a small cigar with a reputation for quality construction, approachable strength and more flavor than its size might suggest. We start with barnyard hay on the nose and an elusive fruity sweetness on the cold draw. Once lit, the Short Story develops a gentle pepperiness that eventually leans toward cayenne, balanced by a subtle, creamy sweetness. It's not a wildly complex cigar, but it's consistently enjoyable, and the unique perfecto shape makes for an interesting discussion about cigar construction, draw and burn. We also debate whether this is actually a beginner-friendly cigar, whether the larger Hemingway vitolas offer better value and whether smoking several sizes of the same blend side by side would reveal just how much a cigar's shape influences flavor. *The stories: No script. No safety net.* Since we're smoking a Short Story, everybody brings a story. Unfortunately, nobody establishes any rules about what kind of story. Patrick kicks things off with a cautionary tale about a young pastor, a tiny country church, a catastrophic bathroom emergency and the unexpected dangers of cuffed suit pants. Ryan takes us back to childhood squirrel hunting with his dad, including the moment his father got so excited about spotting a squirrel that he nearly forgot who was supposed to take the shot. Steven contributes a wilderness adventure involving a men's camping trip, a chipmunk, a .22 rifle and an extremely disappointing meal. He also recalls experiencing an earthquake in California and the resulting panic when his wife thought their daughter had somehow moved across the room without explanation. From there, we get into the school drills of our childhood: earthquakes, tornadoes, desks that were too small to hide under and the decidedly different realities of school safety today. And somehow we arrive at the decline of American civilization, as measured by the apparent disappearance of classroom fart etiquette. *The cigar nerd stuff* We do eventually find our way back to tobacco. Steven provides an update on his homegrown tobacco crop, including the challenges of curing leaves in an Ohio barn and some unfortunate discoveries involving mold. That leads to a question that has divided cigar enthusiasts for years: Is cigar plume a real sign of proper aging, or is it just mold with better marketing? We don't settle the debate, but we might have talked ourselves into a future episode with an actual scientist. We also explore Ernest Hemingway's influence on American writing, Arturo Fuente's role in establishing Dominican tobacco as a premium product and why the Short Story's small size doesn't necessarily translate into a short smoking experience. *Final ratings* The Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story earns a warm reception across the garage: Steven: 7–7.5/10 Ryan: 8/10 Patrick: 7–7.5/10 All three appreciate the Short Story's flavor, construction and dependable Fuente quality, even if we disagree about whether the four-inch format provides enough cigar for the money. *One short cigar.
