What does it take to safely run a rally race through the forests of Ohio?
I spent the weekend volunteering at the Southern Ohio Forest Rally as a corner marshal. While my primary responsibility was helping keep drivers, teams, and spectators safe, rally organizers encourage as many marshals as possible to be licensed radio operators. Reliable communications are critical when you're spread across miles of forest roads.
In this video, I take you behind the scenes of the Southern Ohio Forest Rally and show what it's really like to volunteer at one of America's premier rally events.
You'll see:
What I pack for a day on stage
Pre-race preparation and check-in
What happens when you arrive at your assigned location
The responsibilities of a corner marshal
How radio communications are used during the event
Rally cars in action
A real incident involving a disabled car on course
What happens after the final car passes
Events like the Southern Ohio Forest Rally require hundreds of volunteers to operate safely and successfully. This video is a look at the people behind the scenes who help make it all happen.
