A soldier takes off his soaked boot—and realizes he can barely feel his toes. Across the trench, another picks lice from his shirt. Breakfast still hasn’t arrived. Nobody has attacked this morning. How did soldiers survive living like this? This episode of Ranks of War follows daily life in the British and Canadian trenches of the Western Front. Drawing on soldiers’ accounts and medical records, it explores trench foot, rats, lice, broken sleep, cold rations and the difficulty of finding drinking water while surrounded by mud. It also examines improvised protection against poison gas, the dangerous journey wounded men faced to reach treatment, and the rotation system intended to get soldiers out of the front line before exhaustion and illness overwhelmed them. This is a historical reconstruction drawn from multiple accounts, showing the work required to keep men alive between battles. Which would have been hardest to endure: the broken sleep, the constant wet, or never knowing when danger would arrive?
