What can a heavy wooden sword teach us about balance?
The Suburitō (素振り刀) is often used for strength, sword mechanics and repeated Suburi practice. But its weight can also reveal something much more subtle: how well the whole body is organized while moving.
In this video, I explore how Suburitō training challenges dynamic balance, weight transfer and whole-body coordination.
Because the Suburitō is heavy and held away from the body, small changes in posture become much easier to feel. The movement can expose tension in the shoulders, uneven weight distribution, poor footwork or compensations in the spine and pelvis.

These principles trained through the Suburitō are not limited to sword practice. Similar physical skills appear in Aikidō, traditional Jūdō and Jūjutsu: grounding, weight transfer, center control, coordination and the ability to remain organized while moving.
For me, this is part of the larger idea of the Budō Body — exploring the physical skills that connect different martial arts, rather than limiting them to one particular technique or discipline.

This is not about using the heaviest Suburitō possible.
The goal is controlled movement, awareness and better organization of the body.
Train the movement. Feel the difference. Keep exploring.✨️
